STG UK is converting its XQS 8mg SKU into a 10mg version, citing consumer demand for medium and higher strengths
Virgin Peppermint is completely nicotine free and therefore not subject to the upcoming ban on free sampling of nicotine products
All new XQS flavours will launch online only to test demand before becoming available to retailers
Scandinavian Tobacco Group UK is restructuring its XQS nicotine pouch portfolio around a concrete strength shift: the existing 8mg SKU becomes a 10mg version, and the range gains a completely nicotine-free Virgin Peppermint flavour. The distributor's stated rationale is demand data — STG says consumer behaviour shows medium and higher strengths are preferred by a growing number of pouch users.
Not every flavour moves up. Tropical and Spearmint stay at lower strengths, positioned to serve new entrants to the nicotine pouch category. The portfolio, in effect, is being tiered: higher-strength options for established users, lower-strength variants for recruitment.
The nicotine-free Virgin Peppermint launch carries a regulatory dimension. Because it contains no nicotine, the product falls outside the upcoming regulation banning free sampling of all nicotine products — a constraint that will apply to the rest of the XQS range. A nicotine-free SKU gives STG UK a sampling-legal entry point into the alternative pouch category, while the strength transition concentrates the core line where the company says the largest demand sits.
Adam Palmer, senior brand manager at STG UK, framed both moves as portfolio management rather than simple line extensions. "It's been a really busy year so far for XQS and we're confident that these two latest pieces of news will help keep the brand moving in a positive trajectory," he said. "The sku transition will cleanse the portfolio to cater for largest strength demand, while the introduction of a nicotine free variant gives a new option and should add incremental growth in the alternative pouch category."
Palmer also disclosed a change to the brand's route-to-market for innovation. All new XQS flavours will launch online only, tested for popularity and relevance with what he called "high intent audiences," before reaching retail availability. The stated aim is greater launch success — an approach that shifts early demand validation from wholesale buyers to direct consumer behaviour data.
For distributors and retailers carrying next-generation nicotine products, the moves signal two things. First, strength segmentation is becoming a portfolio discipline: STG is explicitly matching SKU architecture to measured demand tiers rather than running a flat strength range. Second, the online-first launch model compresses the traditional wholesale test window — retailers will see flavours only after digital demand is proven, which changes the risk profile of new product intake in the pouch category.
The sampling regulation itself sets a clock on the nicotine-containing range's promotional toolkit, making the nicotine-free variant a compliance asset as well as a growth play. Palmer's closing assessment points to continued rollout activity: the online-first pipeline means further flavour launches can be expected through the year, with retail distribution following only where digital demand data supports it.
