Packing list

  • Boston Beer's Q3 net revenue was $520 million, down 3.2% year over year.

  • Rally Dog Vodka Ade launched in four states in early 2025, with national rollout planned for 2027.

  • Constellation Brands acquired SpikedAde for $75 million.

  • Beyond beer volumes grew 1% year to date while traditional beer declined 3%.

  • Mark Anthony Group launched RefreshAde and Stateside Brands launched Super Lyte.

Boston Beer posted third-quarter net revenue of $520 million, down 3.2% year over year, and CEO Jim Koch is pointing the Samuel Adams maker's next growth push at vodka ade — a hard sports drink category he says has "exploded faster" than hard teas or seltzers.

The company launched Rally Dog Vodka Ade in four states earlier this year and plans a national rollout in 2027, Koch told analysts on an earnings call last week. The category combines sports-drink flavors such as Gatorade and Powerade with vodka, typically at low calorie counts and with the electrolytes found in hydration drinks.

"Vodka ade, in a year, has basically gone from this little curiosity primarily in New Jersey to the next big thing in people's minds," Koch said.

Who else is moving into the category?

Rally Dog is the latest entry in a flurry of launches and acquisitions by large alcohol suppliers:

  • Constellation Brands, the Modelo brewer, acquired SpikedAde for $75 million.
  • Stateside Brands, maker of Surfside, launched Super Lyte earlier this year.
  • Mark Anthony Group, owner of White Claw, introduced RefreshAde.

Koch said Boston Beer has already secured commitments from major retail chains that are "making it their No. 2 or 3 bets in the vodka ade category." He did not disclose volumes or dollar commitments tied to those placements.

What does the launch change for distribution?

For wholesalers, the near-term effect is shelf and cold-box reallocation inside an increasingly crowded flavored-alcohol set. Koch said expansion rests on "building awareness, deepening distributor engagement and establishing a larger retail footprint as we head into next year" — a signal that supplier-funded retail support, not just velocity, will drive the rollout.

He expects "a lot of activity" in the space over the next year as more competitors enter, while cautioning that the trend is unlikely to overtake the popularity of hard teas or seltzers. Boston Beer's scale and what Koch called its "track record of innovation" in retail could give it an edge over smaller entrants, he said.

Rally Dog's differentiation strategy rests on branding and simplicity: an unusual name and what Koch described as "easy-to-understand flavors" — Berry Breeze, Tangerine Twist, Lemony Lime and strawberry watermelon.

Why 'beyond beer' carries the portfolio

The vodka ade push fits Boston Beer's broader shift away from declining beer volumes, a pattern shared across the beer category. Its beyond beer portfolio is anchored by Twisted Tea, Sun Cruiser, Angry Orchard and Truly Hard Seltzer.

The company estimated beyond beer volumes grew 1% year to date, outperforming traditional beer, which declined 3% over the same period. That 4-point spread frames the supplier's rationale: growth capital and innovation capacity are flowing to flavored, ready-to-drink formats where volume is still positive.

Koch's claim that vodka ade has scaled faster than hard teas or seltzers did at a comparable stage is a supplier assertion rather than a measured channel figure — no category-level shipment or depletions data was disclosed on the call. The $75 million SpikedAde price tag paid by Constellation is the category's one disclosed transaction value so far.

The test arrives in 2027, when Rally Dog goes national against RefreshAde, Super Lyte and SpikedAde for permanent shelf placement.
