  • BJ's plans a nearly $30 million expansion of its Orlando distribution facility to roughly 280,000 square feet, creating 115 jobs over five years.

  • The retailer is seeking $172,500 in city tax incentives; new jobs would average $56,680 per year versus the national median of $40,300.

  • BJ's is on pace to open 25-30 new stores every two years, with a fourth ambient DC in Commercial Point, Ohio, opening early next year.

BJ's Wholesale Club plans to invest nearly $30 million to expand its Orlando, Florida, distribution facility and convert it into a regional logistics headquarters, according to the Orlando Business Journal.

The Marlborough, Massachusetts-based retailer would add 68,000 square feet to the existing site, bringing the facility to roughly 280,000 square feet, and create 115 jobs over the next five years. Quoting a statement from the city of Orlando, the Business Journal reported that BJ's aims to "establish a regional headquarters for logistics and distribution" to support its expansion in the Southeast. A BJ's spokesperson could not be reached for comment.

The Orlando City Council was scheduled Monday to consider BJ's request for $172,500 in city tax incentives through a program designed to spur creation of jobs paying above the national median in certain low-wage areas. The new positions would pay an average of $56,680 per year, versus the national median wage of $40,300, the Business Journal reported. That wage spread — and the modest size of the incentive relative to the $30 million capital commitment — signals the retailer is anchoring the project on network economics rather than public subsidies.

The Florida investment fits a broader footprint push. BJ's is expanding aggressively across the Southeast and Midwest, with several stores planned for Florida and Texas. On its second-quarter earnings call with analysts last month, the company cited three Texas locations opened in Q2 — Waxahachie, Fort Worth and Grand Prairie — announced a planned opening near Dallas in Tyler, and has a store scheduled to open this fall in Mesquite, Texas.

Last week BJ's opened a location in Foley, Alabama, its second in that state. Earlier this year it disclosed additional sites in Frankfort, Kentucky; Portage, Indiana; and the Florida cities of Ocala, Lecanto and Port St. Lucie, all slated to open in the current fiscal year. Another club is set for a late-2027 opening in DeLand, Florida.

The company remains on pace to open 25-30 new stores every two years, chairman, president and CEO Robert Eddy said during the Q2 call. "The performance of our new club portfolio remains very strong and is a key piece of our long-term strategy," he said.

The Orlando project is not an isolated move in BJ's supply chain buildout. Last year the company announced its fourth ambient distribution center, slated to open early next year in Commercial Point, Ohio. That 500,000-plus square-foot facility will serve BJ's eight Ohio locations and support additional Midwest expansion. It will feature a logistics solution from Swisslog that includes automated pallet storage, case-handling equipment and mixed-case pallet building for club-friendly replenishment, the retailer said.

Together, the Ohio and Florida projects show BJ's pairing high-automation greenfield capacity in the Midwest with an expanded Southeastern hub — the standard playbook for warehouse club operators racing to keep distribution capacity ahead of club openings. For suppliers selling through the club channel, the Southeast buildout implies shifting replenishment volumes toward Florida and Ohio nodes over the next two fiscal years, with the Orlando hub's regional headquarters designation suggesting procurement and logistics decision-making may consolidate there as BJ's store count in the region grows.
